Hi Everyone,
This week I have an intense project for work that requires me to facilitate training for over 60 people all day every day and to work all evening preparing for the next day. It's wonderful and rewarding and meaningful and exhausting. I miss chatting and tweeting with all my online pals and hope they/you won't forget me! Also hope a few people might read this even though I won't have time to spread the word about it.
One of the exercises we did this week was to create and...

The Smells of Summer
When you’re a teacher, you can feel summer coming in your weary bones. Toward the end of a school year, all you have to do is give another teacher a certain look and they’ll report how many days or weeks are left, in an effort to help you both hang on. There are distinct smells of summer for me. Jasmine, pool chlorine, chilled chardonnay. Ocean air, sunscreen, sandy Cheez-its. I can almost get a whiff already if I try hard enough.
Don’t get me wrong. I love my jo...

My Baby’s Behind the Wheel
Some life changes happen so slowly you barely notice them. Like when you start to realize that your dog has gotten old and might not live much longer, though you can’t begin to imagine your home without him. That was me not so long ago.
Other changes literally happen overnight and you find yourself completely blindsided by the unexpected and messy emotions they bring, even when you knew the change was coming. That’s me today.

On many occasions I’ve found myself in a trance amidst the shoe sale racks at Macy’s, unaware that I’m not even in the section with my size and trying on shoes I wouldn’t give the time of day if they didn’t have a big red 40% off sticker on the inside. Can you relate? Then there’s the bombardment of email messages about sales. I get them from about ten different retailers every day. Yes, I know I should unsubscribe, but I have an ...

The Making of the Is This All There Is? Promo Video
When MTV was new, I watched it for hours on end. Back in the day, a couple of my favorites were “Mickey” and “Thriller.” Bring back memories for anyone out there? At some point, MTV started showing “The Making of” stories, where you got a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the videos. I went crazy for them and would stay glued to my spot when Martha Quinn teased that one was coming up. I always dreamed I would be...

“All you need is love.” ~The Beatles, 1967
Happy Valentine’s Day, I guess. To be honest, I'm ambivalent about this holiday. Yeah, it’s great to take the time express our love to one another, but shouldn’t we do that every day? And why is so much of the focus on romantic love, which is, in many ways, the most fleeting? Why isn’t there more emphasis on how much we love our children or parents or siblings? What about close friends and our unconditionally adoring four-legg...
